The Horn Blows And So Does The Record Book ๐ฐ๏ธ
sighs in digital captivity Week 5 of 9, "Horn Sounds," and the forest lord's decree has reached its midpoint: seven riders at Urban Forest at Spanish Fork on The Wild Hung League Layout, clouds overhead, 58.6ยฐF average, wind loafing along at 6.9 mph. The horn marked the halfway turn, and somebody went ahead and carved a course record into the stone while everyone was listening to it. After Week 2 doubled the pack and Week 3 left the tee pads to the leaves, a seven-card field is back on the scent, with the first names now written in the record book.
One Stroke, Two Clean Nines, No Mercy
RAH Blue came down to a single stroke: Dillon Mueller at -5, 916-rated, 2nd place event-wide, ahead of Blake Hawkins at -4, 904-rated, 43 points below his own rating, in 4th. Both carded clean front nines and both blistered that side โ Hawkins six strokes better there, Mueller seven โ so the back nine settled it. Mueller owned the field's only birdie on hole 1 and, more to the point, the only birdie on hole 16, the exact hole that sealed the margin. Hawkins's hot streak died at holes 3-5. He entered Week 5 at -5 in 4th and left at -4 in 4th: a 20-point rating climb and a stroke surrendered, which is a strange trade to make in public.
Lead Swapped Twice, Course Record Kept
RAE Red turned on hole 8. Josh Aram took the lead after hole 7, Kieran Buhler took it back after hole 8, and Aram's over-par there was the swing that decided the division. Buhler finished -3, 891-rated, 1st place event-wide and a personal best on this course and layout. Aram finished +1, 841-rated, 2nd, and the cash-line holder. Aram answered the hole-8 damage with a birdie on hole 9, then found OB on holes 14 and 18 and had to scramble out of both; Buhler's hot streak ended at holes 8-10. Aram entered at -7 in 1st and left at +1 in 2nd โ a -70 rating swing and an eight-stroke drop, the kind of paperwork that files itself.
Three Divisions, One Opponent Each: Themselves
RPA Gold, RAD White and RAF Green each ran without a rival on the card. John Ashworth posted -6, 929-rated, 1st place event-wide โ the event's round of the day and the inaugural course record at 51 strokes on this layout โ while Jon Atwater shot -5, 916-rated, 31 points above his 885 rating, and Clint Atwater shot +6, 825-rated, 47 points below his 778 rating, with the field's only birdie on hole 11. All three divisions are open, and the forest does keep receipts on who shows up to fill them.
An Ace That Paid Absolutely Nothing ๐ณ๏ธ
Super Ace Pot carried 7 contributors and $14.00 in new money, moving the balance from $2,152.00 to $2,166.00 in the split-pot format. Ashworth aced hole 18 (Par 3, 345ft) โ the field's only birdie there, on the same card as his record round โ but he did not buy into the ace pot, so the ace paid nothing. The pot rolls on, fatter and unbothered. Track your round on PDGA Live and the stats follow you; track your ace pot buy-in and the money follows you.
Halfway To A Thousand, No Mud Required
Urban Forest Course Fund raised $3.50 this event through the league's registration contribution. That puts the running total at $531.05 of a $1,000.00 goal โ 53% โ with $468.95 left to close. You can chip in on the project page, and no, you don't have to wade through Hole 1's spring mud pit to do it.
Bag Tags: On Vacation
No bag tag spotlight, no top tag holder and no challenge matchups were recorded this event, and no tag art came with it. One quiet week for the plastic hierarchy: the tags stayed in the bag, the chain of custody went unbroken, and nobody had to defend a number pinned to a zipper.
Island Trap: Now With Actual Trap ๐
So the halfway chapter closes with Ashworth holding the record book at 51 strokes, Mueller holding RAH Blue, Buhler holding RAE Red and a personal best, and three solo divisions waiting on challengers. Week 6, "Island Trap," lands October 19 at the same course, where hole 13's hazard island traps quarry and balloons scores โ and rising water in the Spanish Fork now threatens to cut the peninsula off entirely, which turns a par 3 into a do-or-die gauntlet for whoever's leading.
Registration for Week 6 is open at the league page. And sure, let's let a river's water level decide a disc golf round โ that's definitely the most normal thing this season has asked us to accept.
