Chroma Key
Neon-Glitch Portal Between Cinematic Realities
VHS Tracking Never Stays Stable
Aspects refreshed Jan 21, 2026
Born from a malfunction in the VaporGrid's rendering engine during the first multi-league broadcast, the Chroma Key emerged as a self-correcting algorithm that learned to blend the neon wireframes of different cinematic realities. It began as a visual glitch—a shimmering green field that appeared whenever two league frequencies overlapped—but players discovered they could manipulate it to create temporary portals between tournament settings, blending genres and creating unprecedented narrative connections.
The Chroma Key projects a shimmering green or blue field that can key out any background, replacing it with elements from other league realities. It contains embedded VHS tracking patterns that scroll continuously, with the patterns changing based on which leagues are being connected. The device warps light around it, creating subtle distortion effects that make nearby neon tracers bend and shimmer, and can temporarily store and replay visual fragments from different leagues, creating overlapping ghost images of previous throws.
Serves as a narrative bridge device that allows characters, props, and visual elements to cross between different 80s movie genres, maintaining the series' cohesive cinematic reality while enabling spectacular crossover moments.
