Episode Seven: Reeds Strike Back ๐พ
Nine players signed in for Week 7, "Phragmites Rises," at Mehraban (Baby Bottoms) โ 53.26ยฐF at the start, wind under 9 mph out of the south, overcast skies over the reed corridors. And the ace on hole 17 was only the third-most dramatic thing that happened on a card where three players took turns holding the lead. The reeds make their final push in Episode 7 of 9; the marsh gets the last word next week.
The Ghost Grew, the Lead Didn't
Malachi Vazquez pulled even with Scott Belchak through hole 12, took the lead through 13, and sealed it through 16 when Belchak bogeyed. Vazquez closed -9 at 955, bogey-free, with the ace on 17 from 148 feet and a back nine five strokes better than his front to climb from third to first. Belchak finished -5 at 894 โ 31 below his 925 โ and Nick Jennings -3 at 864, 39 below his 903, though he did drill a 39-foot Circle 2 putt on hole 8. Vazquez's -9 comes a week after a -11, and his rating slid 975 to 955. The ghost grew stronger. The lead held anyway.
The Red Division Beat Its Ghost ๐ฉธ
Nicholas Stosiek retook the lead from Peter Haws through hole 13 after Haws' bogey there, then closed -8 at 940-rated โ 68 points above his 872 rating. Haws answered with -6 at 909, 43 above his 866 and a personal best for the layout, and took the last cash spot. Michael Whipple finished -4 at 879, 23 above his rating, on the bubble. David LaTour carded -1 at 834 with a personal best and a bounce-back birdie on hole 8 after a double on 7. Haws owned the field's only birdie on hole 7 at 205 feet, which is the kind of line that makes the reeds file a complaint.
Two Ghosts, One Scorecard
Brodie Duncan and Marvin Atene both finished -5, both rated 894, and Atene took the lead through hole 10 when Duncan bogeyed it, then again through 16. Atene went bogey-free with clean front and back nines. Duncan aced hole 6 from 125 feet โ a moment for the highlight reel, with the pot question saved for below.
955 and Nobody Argued
The event-wide round of the day belongs to Vazquez's 955, and no one on the card came within 15 points of it.
Aces Are Free, Payouts Aren't
Vazquez's hole-17 ace earns him a share of the $253.41 seasonal ace pot, which pays equal shares at the finale โ currently $253.41 to him. The Super Ace pot sits at $2,594.00 after eight contributors added $16.00, with the active prize at $2,999.91. Duncan's hole-6 ace came without an ace-pot buy-in, so the moment stands and the payout doesn't.
Every Putt Feeds the Reeds ๐ฟ
The Mehraban (Baby Bottoms) Course Fund took in $5.00 this event and stands at $15.50 of a $1,000.00 goal โ 2%, $984.50 to go. Credit Haws ($0.30 winnings donation), LaTour ($0.20), and the league's $4.50 registration contribution.
Still Standing, Still Heavy
AllIn reshuffle means every tag moved. In Pool A, Vazquez defends #1 and the Grim Appendix for the second time โ "Still Standing," Milestone II โ despite a 955 six below his 961. Three straight weeks of drift and the Appendix keeps quietly loading, because that's the Accords' own terms. In Pool B, Stosiek holds #1 with the Ink Sentinel.
Absence buries you here; nobody's tag is safe from one week to the next.
All Hail Whatever's in Charge ๐
The reeds held, the field answered, and the Appendix stayed on top. Week 8 is "Bone Regent" on Nov 6 at the same course, and it demands a dominant player step forward to lead the charge against the encroaching flora before the Marsh Reclaims finale lands behind it.

A wetland is about to crown a regent, and I'm the one contractually obligated to announce the coronation.
