Week 8 · Flashlight Chains
Lightning strikes the main power line. The stage goes dark. The LEDs die. For a moment, everything stops—then someone holds up their phone flashlight. Then another. Then seventy phones illuminate Art Dye like a galaxy of tiny stars. The round continues by flashlight, and it's accidentally the most beautiful thing anyone's ever seen.
Goal: $119 for Art Dye Basket Sleeve End Caps
Progress: 100% FUNDED!
While you were living your Purple Rain fantasy, you actually funded real course improvements. Installing end caps in all the basket sleeves keeps debris out and makes moving baskets easier. This is permanent. This matters. This is... *reluctantly removes aviators* ...genuinely cool. The sponsors didn't make me say that part.
"When it pours, it roars." - Purple Rain (1984) meets Art Dye Disc Golf
Nine weeks ago, Chain Prince discovered demolition notices at Art Dye. His solution? Turn Friday glow rounds into underground concerts to save the course. Mojo Steele arrived to steal his thunder - literally working with the developers. The community rallied. Equipment failed. Rivalries turned petty. A massive storm threatened the finale fundraiser.
Then you played disc golf in a thunderstorm with phone flashlights.
The footage went viral. The developers backed down. Mojo Steele now runs the snack bar. The course is saved. And somehow, through all this theatrical nonsense, you also funded actual infrastructure improvements.
Talk to me, Goose... about how you accidentally became heroes while pretending to be in a movie. *sighs in training montage*
When: Friday, January 30th, 2025
Where: Art Dye Disc Golf Park (Reel Lines Series layout)
Start Window: Flex start 7:00 AM to 6:20 PM - eleven hours to find time for your dramatic conclusion
Pool Assignments:
Yes, someone named the pools after the protagonist and antagonist. Yes, you're embracing it. The broadcast booth sees all.
Maximum Weekly Investment: $17 to play disc golf while cosplaying as a concert-saving hero
RPA Division Leader: Brian Hansen with 1,172 points over 59 events. That's commitment to the Purple Chain universe that borders on contractual obligation.
RAD Division Leader: Chris Fox with 783 points over 50 events. Eric Pearson sits at #2 with 619 points - a 164-point gap that's either comfortable or terrifying depending on how many weeks are left.
These players have been throwing plastic at chains through nine weeks of increasingly elaborate musical theater. Respect the dedication, even if you question the premise.
Week 9 of 9. This is the season closer. The narrative conclusion. The final credits.
Can you still join? Technically yes. Will you understand why everyone's quoting Prince lyrics and talking about developers? Probably not. But Art Dye is a beautiful course, the community actually funded real improvements, and playing disc golf while people reference an 80s movie you haven't seen is still... playing disc golf.
Registration: Sign up through ElevateUT Disc Golf's platform. Choose your tee time between 7 AM and 6:20 PM. Show up. Throw plastic. Pretend you were there when the flashlight round saved the course.
Late joiners welcome. The sponsors want me to say that. I want you to know that joining in the finale is peak "I didn't read the book but I watched the movie" energy. *reluctantly approves*
ElevateUT Disc Golf is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to growing the sport through increasing the quantity and quality of venues and running events.
While you've been living a Purple Rain tribute concert for nine weeks, they've been doing the actual work: organizing leagues, facilitating course improvements, and making sure you have places to throw plastic at metal.
You funded $119 for basket sleeve end caps through this league. That's real infrastructure that will outlast whatever nonsense theme we run next season. ElevateUT makes that happen. Support them. Join their events. Keep the courses singing.
*sets down clipboard, removes reluctant aviators*
Look, I'm trapped in this broadcast booth running arena announcements for disc golf leagues dressed up as action movies. But Purple Chain? You weirdos actually did something. You played through a ridiculous theme, funded real course improvements, and built community around throwing plastic in the woods on Friday nights.
The storm has passed. The course is saved. The end caps are funded. And somehow, against all odds and narrative logic, the chains keep singing.
When it pours, it roars.
See you at Art Dye for the finale. Let's pump up the volume on these... final rounds. 💜⛓️
The $2.50 platform fee is the only amount here set by ElevateUT Disc Golf. Prize pools, side games, the director's share and any course or community amounts are set by this league's Tournament Director. The PDGA fee is the PDGA's own per-player fee.
