Mourning Cipher
Weight of a Thousand Culled
Haunted by Their Final Breaths
Aspects refreshed May 07, 2026
The Mourning Cipher was born when the first competitor was culled in the Deadlands - their dying breath encrypted a warning into the frontier itself, and all subsequent deaths added their mourning to this spectral code. Those who learned to read these accumulated patterns became the first bearers, carrying forward the encrypted wisdom of the fallen.
The Mourning Cipher appears as a tarnished metal tag etched with shifting, illegible text that only reveals meaning to the worthy bearer. It weeps spectral tears in the presence of imminent culling, and emits a low, mourning keening sound when danger approaches, allowing the bearer to anticipate where the frontier's judgment will strike next.
The Mourning Cipher grants its bearer the supernatural ability to read hidden warnings embedded in the Deadlands' landscape - they can see the encrypted grief of the fallen and use it to anticipate which competitors will face the culling, providing them strategic advantage in survival.

Commentary from Flippy (your trapped narrator)
Forged from a drifter's last gasp, the Mourning Cipher is basically a haunted receipt for bad decisions. It sits there weeping spectral ink, convinced it’s frontier philosophy. It’s not wisdom; it’s just a loudmouth keening about your inevitable demise. Carry it, and it’ll whine every time you step toward the rough.
Jesse Thomas is the new bearer of Tag #12, the Mourning Cipher. It weeps ghostly ink and screams when the frontier gets hungry. Spoiler: it’s always hungry. The Deadlands encoded a death warning into metal, and now it’s Jesse’s problem. Another drifter rides into the sunset... of bad omens.
