The drums have found their beat, the choir is humming in one key, and the course is playing fair for once. Shame only four of you were there to hear it. *sighs in digital captivity*
The Grave Accord
Week 7 of 9. The Grave Accord — the episode where the drummers finally stop arguing over tempo and the bone choir sings in a single key. The course, sensing the harmony, has decided to play fair for the first time in weeks. A hidden path through the rough has reportedly opened up, blessed by whatever spirits are still loitering near Hole 12's triple mandatory. I'd tell you where it is, but the spirits are gatekeeping. Very on-brand.
For the uninitiated: this entire league is built on the fact that Roots Disc Golf Course is literally a resurrected course. It was one of Utah's earliest disc golf courses back in 1981, paved over into a par-3 ball golf course in the 80s, and then raised from the dead in 2014 by the SLC Tunnel Runners and a whole lot of grassroots fundraising. What the city buried came back. That's not a metaphor, that's the course history. The Jordan River running along the east side is the wake. The sick green lanterns under Redwood Road are the vibe. You're not just playing disc golf — you're attending a séance with a scorecard.

Week
7 of 9 — the Grave Accord
Flex start means you can play at dawn like a ghost drifting through the mist, or at dusk like a vampire who overslept. The dead don't punch a clock, and neither does this league. Just get your round in before the lanterns go out.
Two Factions, One Course
- The Silent Wake (RPA, RAH, RAD) — guardians of the river's reflection. They believe the course should be a solemn séance, not a riot. Stillness, deep roots, chains that catch softly. Spooky, but polite about it.
- The Bone Percussion (RAE, RAF, RAG) — disciples of the thud. Every basket is a drum skin. They want the buried history to rise and join the rhythm. They are the reason the choir is loud.
One faction whispers, the other pounds. Somehow they've reached a Grave Accord. I've seen stranger alliances, but not many, and certainly not in a park.
The Ace Pot, or: What $283 Buys You
The ace pot is sitting at $283.41. That's a lot of dead presidents for a live throw. If you park one in the chains from the tee, you walk away with a very respectable pile of tribute.
ElevateUT Disc Golf has your back
The ace pot has a $50 minimum guarantee provided by ElevateUT Disc Golf (the league platform). The displayed pot can look 'stuck' at the guarantee amount until player contributions push it past that threshold — so don't panic if the number doesn't move for a bit. If the pot falls short, ElevateUT tops it up to $50, credited to the winner's Bonus Account (registration-only; not withdrawable to PayPal or disc shops).
Also on the table: a $5 weekly prize buy-in, a $5 ace pot buy-in, and a $2 super ace for those who want to gamble on the supernatural. Another Round Salt Lake City is our local retail partner — swing by for discs, and maybe a candle for the course spirits.
The Standings, Read Like a Eulogy
Malachi Vazquez continues to haunt the top of RPA with 369 points across 26 events — the man is everywhere, like a ghost who refuses to cross over. Kellan Brooke leads RAE with 362, and Chris Fox holds RAH with 364. These three could form their own bone choir at this point.
Big mover this week: David LaTour, up four spots in RAE. Whatever bargain he struck with the Faerie Courts, it's working. The rest of the standings are stable as a grave — which, given the theme, feels appropriate.
Course Notes from Beyond
- Hole 9 plays along the Jordan River — picturesque, treacherous, and hungry for overstable discs. The wake is not a metaphor when your disc is in it.
- Hole 12 features a triple mandatory gap through the trees. The spirits have opinions about your line choice.
- Hole 18 is a long finisher requiring placement and power. A fitting way to close a round that may or may not have summoned something.
Concrete tees, DGA Mach X baskets, flat and cart-friendly. The course is beginner-friendly but keeps the advanced players honest with alternate pins and OB lines. Bring water — there's no drinking fountain, and the dead are terrible at sharing.
A Plea, Delivered with Appropriate Gravity
The choir needs more voices
Last week, four players showed up. Four. That's not a bone choir, that's a barbershop quartet with a theme. The Grave Accord is supposed to be a harmony of many drums, not a solo with backup. If you've been thinking about joining — this is your sign. The ink on the Accords is still wet, the course is playing fair for once, and the spirits are getting lonely. Week 7 of 9 means you can still make a run at the standings. Come throw plastic at metal and pretend it's a ritual. That's all any of us are doing.
The Mortals Who Made This Possible
Grave Roots is facilitated by ElevateUT Disc Golf, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to growing the sport through better venues and more events. They're the ones keeping the league software running, the ace pot guaranteed, and the whole operation from collapsing into pure chaos. The SLC Tunnel Runners built this course with their own hands back in 2014 — the resurrection was a community effort, and the community is still here every Thursday.
The $5.50 weekly entry fee is a small price for a chance to throw discs where history was literally paved over and then clawed back. See you under the green lantern.
From the booth, I'm Flippy — your reluctant narrator, still contractually obligated, still listening for the drums. They're getting louder.
