Playing at Elevation
Salt Lake City sits at 4,500 feet, with courses reaching up to 9,000 feet. Here's what out-of-town players need to know.
Published: April 17, 2026
For July in northern Utah, the visitor signal is still a split setup: warm and dry valley rounds with cooler, thinner air at Brighton. Current CPC seasonal guidance continues to favor above-normal warmth across much of the Intermountain West into mid-summer. Mountain weather variability remains typical for this time of year, including breezier afternoons and isolated thunderstorm windows at higher terrain. It is still too early for exact tournament-week timing details on heat peaks, storm timing, or smoke day to day, so this update is for planning expectations rather than day-by-day forecasting.
What Visiting Competitors Should Expect
- Warm valley rounds: Salt Lake Valley venues usually mean strong sun, dry air, and meaningful afternoon heat load in July.
- Cooler, thinner mountain air at Brighton: Near 9,000 feet, temperatures often run cooler than the valley, while altitude can increase fatigue.
- Typical mountain variability: Higher terrain can bring quick shifts in clouds, wind, and isolated thunderstorms compared with valley conditions.
- Smoke is possible: Many days are clear, but regional fire season can still create short-notice air-quality changes for competitors and spectators.
Confidence and Forecast Limits
Confidence is moderate for broad seasonal expectations and low for exact tournament-week specifics. On April 17 we are still outside skillful range for event-window products (CPC Week 3-4 and WPC/NWS inside-10-day tools), so this is planning guidance rather than a day-by-day forecast for July 16-19.
How To Pack and Prepare
- Hydrate early and consistently, and include electrolytes for long rounds in dry air.
- Pack sun gear you will use every round: hat, sunscreen, light long sleeves, and extra water carry.
- Bring mountain layers (light shell plus a warm layer) even when valley forecasts look hot.
- If you play Brighton, plan extra recovery time for elevation and sustained walking.
- Check local air quality each morning during tournament week (UtahAir/AirNow).
- Recheck short-range forecasts in the final 7-10 days before travel for timing-sensitive decisions.
What Changed Since Last Update
The core visitor planning signal is unchanged from April 14: warm valley exposure, cooler-variable Brighton conditions, and possible smoke variability. Since the last update, CPC issued a new long-lead seasonal outlook on April 16 that continues to favor above-normal warmth in the region for the relevant period. CPC seasonal drought guidance also updated on April 16 and still supports persistent western drought concerns, while NIFC's April 1 outlook continues to show above-normal July fire potential in Utah. Week 3-4 and inside-10-day products have rolled forward operationally, but they are still outside the USWDGC event window and not used for event-week specifics.

Thinner air = less drag = more stable flight
Elevation Sickness is Real
The best way to combat altitude sickness? Build your lung capacity before you arrive. Start increasing your cardiovascular activity now. Go on long walks, hike, or jog regularly. Your body will thank you at 9,000 feet.
Hydrate Frequently
High altitude leads to faster dehydration. Drink water before, during, and after your round.
Disc Selection
Use more understable discs than at sea level. Discs fly more stable in thinner air.
Pace Yourself
Reduced oxygen can tire you faster. Bring snacks and take breaks when needed.
