On the opposite end of the fairway, Erik Hansen smirked, his augmented eyes already calculating the disc's path. His hulking Cosmic Carnotaurus pawed at the turf, its polished obsidian scales glinting with an array of pulsing cybernetics. The beast looked as eager as its rider to crush this rookie upstart.
"This kid's got moxie, I'll give him that," Jett Novak drawled, the legendary cowboy's gravelly voice crackling over the hover-cam feed. "But moxie alone ain't enough to beat a vet like Hansen and that monstrosity he calls a dino."
As if on cue, the Cosmic Carnotaurus sprang into action, its chrome-plated legs churning up divots as it charged down the fairway. Jet's disc, a sleek nanocarbon driver, curved gracefully towards the basket, but the Carnotaurus was faster. Leaping with hydraulic-assisted strength, it snatched the disc clean out of the air, crushing Jet's hopes of an upset victory.
The gallery erupted with a mix of cheers and jeers as Erik strutted to the basket, his dino depositing the captured disc at his feet. "Maybe next year, rook," he called, flashing a cocky grin at Jet. "If you're lucky, I might let you shine my Cosmic's spurs."
Jet clenched his jaw, fighting the urge to fire back. He knew trash talk was part of the game, but it stung more coming from a member of Nero's Marauders. That band of augmentation-obsessed outlaws had been a thorn in the Nova Brigade's side all season, and Jet desperately wanted to put them in their place.
"Easy, partner," Jett soothed, sensing his young protégé's frustration even from the broadcast booth. "This is just the first salvo. You'll get plenty more shots at Hansen and his ilk."
Jet took a deep breath, patting Nova's armored flank. "You're right, Jett. We'll get 'em next time, girl."
As the pair rode off to the next hole, Jet couldn't shake the feeling that this was about more than just a game. The Marauders' ruthless tactics and unrestrained use of illegal tech represented a threat to the very soul of the sport. If cowboys like Nero and Erik had their way, the art of the natural bond between rider and steed would be lost forever, replaced by a cold arms race of circuitry and steel.
