The Salt Sigil originated from the first survivor of the Deadlands - a cunning frontiersman who discovered that the crossroads where the culling claimed souls could be warded through the simple act of scattering salt. The frontier itself absorbed this knowledge, and now grants the sigil to those who demonstrate similar understanding: that the weak get culled not through random chance but through predictable patterns, and those who learn to read those patterns can salt their path against the darkness.
The Salt Sigil appears as a raised, silver-tinged brand on the bearer's forearm - a circular mark containing intricate traditional tattoo-style linework depicting a serpent consuming its own tail. The mark feels warm to the bearer but cold to others, and occasionally secretes fine salt crystals that shimmer in the frontier's harsh light. The sigil grows warmer as danger approaches, warning bearers of imminent culling, and leaves faint crystalline residue on surfaces the bearer touches.
The Salt Sigil grants its bearer minor protection against the culling's supernatural targeting and allows them to sense imminent elimination before it manifests. Unlike aggressive predators who hunt through skill, Salt Sigil bearers survive through pattern recognition and defensive awareness - they understand that the frontier rewards those who watch, wait, and strike only when victory is assured.
