Published: July 12, 2026
For mid-July in northern Utah, visiting competitors should plan for warm, sunny, dry valley rounds and cooler, thinner mountain air at Brighton. A short heat wave is peaking locally this weekend, then increasing monsoonal moisture should bring more variability in mountain clouds, showers, lightning, and outflow winds. The tournament window is now within short-range guidance, but exact July 16-19 tee-time conditions are still being refined, so use this as travel and packing guidance rather than a day-by-day forecast. Summer air quality can change quickly from ozone, dust, or wildfire smoke, so check UtahAir and AirNow during travel and tournament week.
What Visiting Competitors Should Expect
- Warm valley rounds: Salt Lake Valley courses sit around 4,200 to 4,500 feet and usually bring strong July sun, dry air, and noticeable afternoon heat load.
- Cooler, thinner mountain air at Brighton: Brighton is near 9,000 feet, so expect cooler air than the valley and a little more fatigue from sustained walking at altitude.
- Typical mountain variability: Higher terrain can bring quicker shifts in clouds, wind, and isolated thunderstorm or lightning chances than valley venues, especially as monsoonal moisture moves north.
- Smoke potential: Many Utah summer days are clear, but current drought, above-normal Great Basin fire potential, ozone, dust, and transported smoke can still change AQI on short notice.
Confidence and Forecast Limits
Confidence is moderate for the broad July pattern and higher for the near-term heat easing, but exact tournament-week details remain subject to short-range updates. The latest CPC Week 3-4 outlook was issued July 10 and is valid July 25-August 7, so it is outside the July 16-19 tournament window and remains broad probabilistic guidance. WPC hazards now cover July 15-19, and the July 12 NWS Salt Lake City discussion provides useful context for the heat peak and incoming monsoonal moisture; neither product replaces the local forecast for a specific tee time. Recheck local valley and Brighton forecasts, watches, and air quality during travel and each tournament morning.
How To Pack and Prepare
- Hydrate early and consistently, and bring electrolytes for long rounds in dry air.
- Pack sun gear you will use every round: hat, sunscreen, light long sleeves, and extra water carry.
- Bring mountain layers: a light shell and a warm layer for Brighton, even if valley forecasts look hot.
- If you play Brighton, plan extra recovery time for elevation and sustained walking.
- Check local air quality each morning during tournament week (UtahAir/AirNow).
- Recheck short-range valley and Brighton forecasts in the final 7 to 10 days before travel.
What Changed Since Last Update
Since the July 11 update, WPC's Day 3-7 hazards product now covers July 15-19, including the full tournament window, while the July 12 NWS Salt Lake City discussion shows the heat wave peaking Sunday and monsoonal moisture spreading north with increasing shower and thunderstorm potential early in the week. Utah DEQ's July 12 Salt Lake County forecast is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Sunday through Tuesday, reflecting current short-range ozone risk rather than a tournament-week smoke forecast. The July 7 U.S. Drought Monitor still shows all of Utah in drought, including widespread severe and extreme drought, while NIFC's July 1 outlook keeps Great Basin significant fire potential above normal through July. CPC Week 3-4 remains outside the event window at July 25-August 7, so exact July 16-19 tee-time heat, wind, lightning, and smoke details still depend on local short-range updates.

Thinner air = less drag = more stable flight
Elevation Sickness is Real
The best way to combat altitude sickness? Build your lung capacity before you arrive. Start increasing your cardiovascular activity now. Go on long walks, hike, or jog regularly. Your body will thank you at 9,000 feet.
Hydrate Frequently
High altitude leads to faster dehydration. Drink water before, during, and after your round. Sunwarrior is the official hydration sponsor of USWDGC 2026.
Disc Selection
Use more understable discs than at sea level. Discs fly more stable in thinner air.
Pace Yourself
Reduced oxygen can tire you faster. Bring snacks and take breaks when needed.
