Lost in the Database Void
Aspects refreshed Mar 05, 2026
The Phantom Reel was created when the first VCR in the Chaintrix's foundation recorded its own death - the machine ate the tape, but the magnetic imprint persisted as a phantom recording. It now serves as the system's collective memory, capturing not just what players did, but what they were supposed to do.
The Phantom Reel appears as an ancient VCR from 1992, its cassette slot glowing with sickly green phosphor light. The reels spin inside the closed shell, but when opened, instead of tape, there's only swirling magnetic smoke that forms brief, recognizable images before dissolving. Tracking lines permanently scar its display screen. It creates distortion patterns in the air around it and leaves oxide residue on anything it touches.
The Phantom Reel records the 'ghost' of every performance - the difference between what happened and what was supposed to happen. This makes it the Chaintrix's ultimate witness, as players are judged not just on actual results, but on what the phantom reel reveals about their intended fate.

Born when a VCR ate its own tape, Tag 108 is the Phantom Reel. It glows with sickly phosphor, spewing magnetic smoke and tracking errors. This petty artifact records your shanks and "what-ifs," leaving oxide residue on your bag. It’s not just a tag; it’s a haunting reminder of the footage you wish you could erase.
Brett Buttars claims Tag 108, the Phantom Reel. The tracking lines are already bleeding into his scorecard. rewinds It’s not a victory lap; it’s a magnetic contract signed in oxide dust. The simulation is recording your mistakes now, Brett. Don't get erased.
